Struggling Free

Struggling Free

I hear the doves calling
In the first light of day,
Singing in the silences
Just outside my window
And in the far away,
Outside the thicket and tangle
Of my mind.

As I struggle from the blankets
Of the comfort and safety
Of my bed,
Oh how I long to fly,
Un-tethered to the earth,
Circling high above
In the freedom of the heavens
With those blessed birds.

There are those that say
That heaven cannot be reached
While living, only after.
This is not death I speak of,
Some rising from an earthy grave,
But to escape into life
From the falsely secure
Cities of our making,
With their convoluted streets,
The confining and withholding grids
And all the known pathways and byways
Where we walk so confidently.

To once again enjoy
Innocence, freedom and clarity,
Outside the muddle
Of hustle and bustle
Which grasps us from within,
Cementing the accumulated beliefs
Of what and who we are,
Entrapping us
In this earthly prison
To which we cling to so tenaciously.

And as the light within and without us grows
And the birds singing in the silences
Grow louder,
We struggle for the forgotten door
Passing through our shudders of fears,
That we might lose
All that will be left behind,
And entering that vast forbidden place,
We lose the battle itself,
As the universe of the past
Explodes behind us,
But yet remains.

And thus we become
Free of mind,
The beings of light
That we truly are,
Singing and soaring
In the crystalline limitless sky
Of creation unbound,
The sunlight of our maker
Glinting the colors of our wings,
Free at last
From the constrictions
Of all our convenient prepossessions,
In the bliss of reconciliation
With our beloved.

  1. Re-writes are fun. They usually are about clarifying something, but sometimes to correct false starts or misdirection. Creating is both a jouney of discovery and a transformative process. It can heal. One clarification lead to another. In writing and paiting, it is the process of the poem or painting revealing itself to us. “As I listen to the creator within, I am led. As I listen to my creativity, I am led to my creator.” – Julia Cameron “The Artist´s Way”. Any thoughts on this topic anybody?
